The “Everyone’s A Critic” Review
British director Christopher Smith is doing great things for UK cinema; he is delivering films that are NOT tacky rom-coms or gangster/football hooligan flicks.
Though each of his films (Creep and Severance came prior to Triangle) is rooted in the “horror” genre, he has taken each film into its own territory with each completely different to the last.
Triangle, though not a masterpiece, is a cleverly written study of remorse and obsession with trying to make things right, here disguised as a creepy thriller.
Melissa George is superb as Jess, a single mum with a mentally handicapped son. When we meet her she is clearly finding things difficult, so when she arrives to join her friends on a boating trip, we wonder what has been going on in her life to leave her this way.
To say much more would ruin the film, but what follows is a film that delivers twist upon twist and demands repeat viewing to ensure you caught everything.
Smith is obviously feeling more confident as director and writer; the film looks great, is deftly directed and gives the audience plenty of tension to keep you guessing all the way through.
Triangle is highly recommended for horror/thriller fans looking for something classy and different. Good job Christopher, we look forward to seeing what twisted nightmare you come up with next.
